Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education

2010 SL Conference – March 12-13, 2010

Here’s a conference you might want to check out. (This is not a Learning Innovation Campus event.  This post is informational only.)

‘IMAGINATION AROUND THE WORLD’

The Virtual World Best Practices 2010 focus is “Imagination Around the World”.  From the North, East, West and South corners of the physical world what is evident is the collaborate nature of virtual world participants to share knowledge and experience. This 48 hour conference will indeed provide opportunities for sharing and further understanding virtual world technology.

The Virtual World Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) conference originated from the 2007 Second Life Best Practices in Education Conference. This grassroots, community-based conference attracts faculty, instructors, trainers, administrators, instructional designers, technical specialists, and members of organizations from around the world. Those who create teaching/learning environments, resources, tools, support services and professional development opportunities internal and external to virtual world environments participate. During the conference, participants have opportunities to ask: What is education?, What is teaching?, What is learning? And how can we provide virtual world educational environments in which today’s learners can become all they can be?

The VWBPE Conference provides opportunities for virtual world communities to showcase projects, courses, events and research that lead to best practices in education. The end result of collaborating, sharing, and co-construction of knowledge during the conference is the creation of innovative and immersive environments in which virtual world residents can learn, work, and play.

2010 – The Year for Innovative Training in Second Life

Posted by: Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist – JonenaL Revnik in Second Life

Innovation is the key that will make our corporations stronger in the coming years and it will take more than innovating products and services to make this possible.  Now is the time companies need to expand our thinking and embrace training our younger generation in ways that spur their creative, innovating juices.  We simply won’t be able to accomplish this with week or month-long face-to-face, classroom training.

Our newest learners are used to watching TV, texting and playing online video games all simultaneously.  Some of us simply can’t fathom how or why they would want to learn this way, but the reality is that they do it everyday as a matter of course.  How many of us remember asking our kids to turn off the loud music or TV while they were doing their homework only to be told it helped them concentrate?  We didn’t believe them then…but we must believe them now.  They were studying and their grades indicated that their unique way of learning was working for them.

My offer to all the boomers out there that want to learn how their X and Y generation learners want and need to process information is to join us on Learning Innovation Campus.  We will learn together as a consortium of like-minded individuals who want our employees and companies to succeed in 2010 and beyond.

If you’d like to chat, give me a call at 602-263-1961.  We can brainstorm how you can jump in all the way or just take baby steps into this world of interactive, online learning.  Our island is set up as turn-key for new comers to Second Life, so be assured, we will walk you through this new door of brick and mortar-less learning together.

Wishing you a Healthy and Prosperous 2010!

As we approach the New Year, we are prompted to pause for a moment, count our many blessings and to thank you, our customers, suppliers and associates who have helped to make our success possible.  Yes, it’s been a challenging year as we have all worked to weather the financial difficulties plaguing our great country, but we still have so many reasons to be grateful.

Fitting with our tradition, we have once again experienced a year of change.  I formally changed my title to President and Leadership Evangelist.  Yes, I’m on a quest to spread the word on Transparent Leadership and why our country and business’ must get on board with the the concept of leading with transparancy, honesty and trust.

We’ve tightened our belts and concentrated on meeting the needs of our active clients while getting our COREformance Curriculum ready to sell as off-the-shelf products.  We re-launched our island in Second Life, Learning Innovation Campus, as a learning incubator for learning professionals to collaborate and grow with the many demands of the changing learning landscape.  Drop by and even consider joining us as a resident.  http://slurl.com/secondlife/Learning%20Innovation/128/148/24

We started the EMR / EHR Clinical Transoformation Group in LinkedIn, which is growing and has many active members. Additionally, we’ve launched two new blogs:  Second Life Learning Innovation Campus and Healthcare Talent Transformation.  All of our blogs can be accessed from our webpage:  www.tbdconsulting.com.

One thing will always remain the same: Our commitment to our customers as we strive to help you improve your performance management, employee engagement and process effectiveness.

Wishing you a Healthy and Prosperous 2010!

Considering hosting networking or training events, but budgets are too tight? How about a – FREE – Holiday Event in Second Life?

Posted by:  Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist

Second Life was a hot topic at the San Diego ASTD Conference last month.  My topic, Converting Face-to-Face Classes for Virtual Delivery to Enhance Competencis that Go Beyond Borders, was standing-room-only.   Wow, next time I’ll ask for a larger room!

As a past president of an ASTD chapter, I’m keenly aware of how our profession is changing.  That is one reason we developed Learning Innovation Campus in Second Life. It’s our goal that this incubator of like-minded learning professionals will learn and share together.  Please consider joining our community.

We have parcels to rent, community conference center with every thing needed to host small and large gatherings. Not only can we all expand our profession by offering training, meetings and networking events, we will reduce travel costs and allow people from all around the blobe to get together more often.

NOTE:  All events must be for G-rated business events.

Please contact me if you’re interested in joining us in Second Life.

Second Life Training Collaboration between US Air Force and Vanderbuilt University

Posted by:  Jonena Relth, President and Leadership Evangelist  (JonenaL Revnik in SL)

It’s encouraging to continue learning about educators from all walks of life using Second Life to expand their training and reach people in whole new ways.  Here’s one such article that talks about the Air Force working in conjunction with Vanderbilt University.”

“As Air University’s Innovation and Integration Division put it in an invitation to the event, “[Global Learning Forum] members collaborate to harness the power of virtual communities to innovatively transform ways to learn, instruct and discover.”

In other words, Air Force educators, along with their peers across academia, see great potential in being able to connect people, using computers, in a fake environment.

Within the Air Force, Air University educators predict that “the seams between virtual and physical systems will increasingly become ubiquitous in service to lifelong learning and support of Airmen.”

Because the Second Life program enables users to do basically anything they want, to include creating their own objects, terrain, buildings and even aircraft, the possibilities for training scenarios or enhanced classroom learning are endless.
